Coaching Staff


Bruce Gemmell

Head Coach - Gold 1&2

Bruce Gemmell joined the staff in 2012. ASCA named him the National Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He also received USA Swimming's Golden Goggle for Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014, 2015. He has been a US National Team Coach 10 times and a National Junior Team Coach 13 times. He was the Head Coach of the 2012 US Junior World Open Water Team and the 2017 US FINA Jr World Championships Team. He was an assistant coach on the 2014 Pan Pac Team, the 2013 and 2015 World Championships, 2010 Junior Pan Pacs, and 2016 Olympic Team. He is an ASCA Level 5 Coach.

Jeff Bryan

Jeff Bryan joined the NCAP staff in the fall of 2014 as Coach of Gold III-Georgetown Prep. Jeff has competed and coached at all levels of swimming from summer league, YMCA, High School to NCAA Division I college teams and US Masters’ programs. Jeff oversaw the growth of the Georgetown University program from a co-ed club type team with 9 men and 3 women to a Division I Men’s and Women’s Big East competitor with a combined roster in excess of 65 non-scholarship athletes. Then he had a child and his life as he had known it came to an end.......til four years ago.

Sue Chen 

Sue started her career in PVS with RMSC back in 1992. She was a member of the US National Coaching staff for the Youth National Team in Vancouver, coach for the NCSA All-American team in Dublin, Ireland, and the World Youth Games in Lima Peru. Throughout her career, she has developed swimmers into Olympics Trial finalist, US National qualifiers, Junior national qualifiers, sectional and age group champions. She is the club coach on record for Jack Conger, American record holder in 200 fly, Gold Medalist in Rio (800M Free Relay), independent high school national record holder in the 500 free and 100 free. Sue has been on several camp staffs for USA Swimming – 2013, and 2015 National Junior Camp assistant coach. 2014 Head women’s coach National Select Camp. 2011 Assistant coach Junior World Championships. Sue is a member for the Women’s Leadership program for USA swimming. This program is to help women coaches at every level become successful in coaching. She is married and has 3 children and 2 black labs! 

Stephen Sakaris

Stephen has been swimming competitively since he was 8 years old, starting with Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL) and later club swimming with PVS. He was a national qualifier and club team record holder (200 Free). As an Ohio State University varsity swimmer for four years, he received All American Honors and was a USA Swimming National Champion (2010) and a member of OSU’s 2010 Big Ten Championship team. Stephen was a member of the team’s record setting 400 and 800 freestyle relay. Stephen was also an Olympic Trial qualifier in 2012 (200 Free). Stephen coached 3 years at a USA Swimming Club as a head coach for their Senior and Senior Training groups while helping out with most groups and ages. He was an assistant coach in the MCSL for four years and is currently the head coach of a CCSDA Club. When not on deck, or at the pool, Stephen likes to lift weights, golf, hike and hang out with his two dogs.

Dory Halbe

Dory joined the NCAP staff in 2011. Dory began competitive swimming at age 8 and grew up in San Jose, California. She swam for Mission San Jose Aquatics in California before attending American University. While at American University, she broke the school record in the 50 & 100 Free, 100 Breast, and 200 IM. She currently lives in Kensington, MD with her husband and 3 kids. She is expecting her 4th child in August 2018. 

Shannon Dietrich

Shannon started coaching in Montgomery County in 2007. She grew up doing many sports, including swimming, and eventually played lacrosse at the University of Virginia in the 1990s. While Shannon enjoyed being a part of NCAA Division 1 athletics, she enjoyed summer swimming as a child even more. This joy, combined with her love of working with children, contributes to her passion for working with young swimmers in Montgomery County. Shannon lives in Rockville with her husband and 3 children.
